Stadio Della Roma
The proposed new home to the AS Roma football team will transform the peripheral Tor di Valle in Rome into a sporting hub and new cultural center for the city.
A Modern Homage to the Original Colosseum
The Stadio della Roma complex, home to the AS Roma football team, will transform the peripheral Tor di Valle in Rome into a sporting hub and new cultural center for the city.
We are providing structural and façade engineering services to MEIS Architects for the new 52,500-seat stadium. The complex will contain shops, restaurants, an interactive AS Roma Hall of Fame as well as the team’s state-of-the-art training and wellness facility.
Highlights
- The roof of the stadium is inspired by the velarium, the original stretched fabric cladding covering the seating area of the Colosseum to protect spectators from rain and provide shade.
- We designed the roof’s structural system based on the principle of a tensioned cable net. A steel outer compression truss connects to the set of inner tension rings by radial cable trusses, forming the primary structure of the roof. Two sets of tension rings allow for the opening at the center of the roof.
- A series of steel arches that run circumferentially support the curved fabric tension membrane that covers the main portion of the roof.
- A metal and glass facade will resemble the fenestration of the Colosseum, wrapped in a floating scrim made of travertine quarried from the same region of Italy as the original Roman amphitheater.
