Cheongna SSG Baseball Stadium
The world's first baseball stadium with an integrated shopping mall is coming to South Korea.
Overview
South Korea will be the first country to have a stadium connected to a shopping mall. Visitors will be able to don a jersey while watching the SSG Landers play baseball and also peruse retail outlets at Starfield Cheongdo without even stepping outside. With a seating capacity of 21,000, the stadium will operate year-round as a venue for concerts, e-sports competitions, international exhibitions and trade fairs. Plans for the project also include an infinity pool that overlooks the baseball field, allowing for guests to swim while watching a game of baseball.
We are providing structural design services to DLA+ for the baseball stadium, scheduled to open in 2028.
Highlights
- The entire field is composed of a cast-in-place concrete slab due to three levels of below-grade parking below the playing field. Atop this, the structure is designed for heavy truck and public occupancy loads, while the roof is designed for show rigging loads so the stadium can also host large concerts and other non-baseball events.
- The superstructure is a hybrid system consisting of cast-in-place concrete up to the playing field level and structural steel above that. The lateral system is comprised of concrete shear walls that also support the octagon domed roof structure.
- Our team worked to help come up with a hybrid octagon dome structure entirely unique for a baseball stadium. The design achieved a blend of architectural appeal and cost-effectiveness, creating a fully enclosed and conditioned stadium.
