overview

The centerpiece of the 467,400-square-meter Hangzhou Asian Games 2022 Park is a 6,500-seat indoor table tennis stadium designed to double as a concert hall and events space for the city after the games. The stadium’s oblong, asymmetric form is inspired by the cong, an ancient Hangzhou jade stone artifact.

We provided structural design and sustainability consulting services to Archi-Tectonics for the project, which features a Suspendome roof, similar in structure to a bicycle wheel, that supports a steel and glass diagrid skin.

highlights

  • The Suspendome roof spans 90 meters above the arena and cantilevers 25 meters on the exterior, allowing the lobby area to be entirely column free.
  • The roof structure was designed to be constructed and installed in just 15 segments. It features a large oculus with a sculptural deflector that diffuses sunlight into the bowl below.
  • Suspended from the roof structure is the double curved glass diagrid façade, which features deep structural sections that provide shading during the summer.
  • Through BIM optimization, the design team saved 1,130 tons of steel and accelerated construction time by 20%.
