Overview
Located at the northeast corner of Cherry and Mill Streets in Toronto, West Don Lands Block 8 addresses a pressing need for purpose-built, high-quality rental housing serving all income levels. The development consists of three residential towers that sit on a shared, one-storey basement with 11,750 square meters of parking.
We are providing structural design to Cobe Architects & architectsAlliance for the fast-track complex, which is expected to open in 2022.
Highlights
- The most challenging part of the structural system was designing the multi-transfer system on floors where the “stacking” shifts. To accomplish this our engineers introduced transfer beams and slabs on multiple floors.
- The façades of each tower cantilever, creating unique views throughout. Accentuating the cantilevers, each tower stacks on top of the podium eccentrically, creating a striking geometry across the various building elevations.
- In order to achieve this dramatic architectural feature, we recommended concrete shear walls with a flat-plate floor system in all three towers.
