Overview

The Waynflete Lower School is a 30,000-square-foot addition to the existing Waynflete School Campus. Designed as two wings joined by an atrium and a shared classroom, all of the classrooms have three exposures to natural light. Although the Lower School is physically connected to the existing school, the project is being treated as a separate structure for energy analysis and certification purposes. The campus addition was designed as an environmentally friendly, PHIUS+-certified structure with several long-term sustainable benefits.

We provided structural design and passive house consulting to Scott Simons Architects for the campus addition, which was completed in 2019.

Highlights

  • We were responsible for verifying that the project meets the stringent energy-performance criteria to achieve certification.
  • To ensure the most cost-effective and energy-efficient systems, our team conducted detailed energy analyses, evaluations and review of a variety of exterior walls and windows, lighting and HVAC design components.
  • Based on our energy analysis, the building is expected be more than 50 percent more efficient than a typical high-performance school building.
  • The building features triple-glazed windows, R-40 walls, R-60 roofs, R-20 underslab insulation and 90 percent energy recovery effectiveness on the ventilation air supply.
