State of California Resources Building
Seismic upgrades and a full exterior recladding bring an International Style office building into the 21st century.
overview
Originally built in 1962, the International Style Resources Building for the State of California in Sacramento is occupied by the departments of Fish and Wildlife, Water Resources, Parks and Recreation and Forestry and Fire Protection. In addition to providing office space, the building serves as a critical hub for the California Public Safety Microwave System, which provides local emergency services agencies with access to emergency management communications throughout Northern California.
As part of an extensive renovation project that included seismic upgrades and a full exterior recladding, we provided criteria and peer review services to DLR Group to ensure that the seismic retrofit of the building was performed appropriately and remained within budget.
highlights
- The existing steel truss moment frame system required a significant retrofit. We reviewed numerous solutions to determine the best fit for the State’s requirements for both seismic performance and function as a modern workspace.
- The renovation replaced the original exterior cladding, a terracotta system, reducing the weight and thus seismic demand on the main structure while alleviating concerns about the connections back to the main structural system, hazardous materials present in the cladding system and ongoing waterproofing issues.
- We utilized our in-house expertise to ensure all issues were addressed while collaborating with historical architecture partners to achieve the appropriate final finishes.
