St. Stephen’s Episcopal Day School, Arts & Innovation Center and Ministry Building
Promoting collaboration and team-based learning, a STEAM education building is designed around flexibility, student engagement and enhancing creativity.
overview
Educating pre-K through 5th grade students, the historic St. Stephen’s Episcopal Day school welcomes two new buildings to its Coconut Grove campus: the Arts & Innovation Center and the Ministry Building. The three-story, 20,000-square-foot, Arts & Innovation Center is a multidisciplinary science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM) education building, and the two-story, 7,500-square-foot, steel-framed ministry building houses the ministry and offices for the clergy.
We provided structural design services to Perkins+Will for the project, which promotes collaboration and team-based learning. Classrooms and gathering spaces are designed around flexibility, student engagement and creativity. The Arts & Innovation Center also features a performance area, recording studio and makerspaces.
highlights
- The structural system for the Arts & Innovation Center was originally a mild-steel, cast-in-place flat plate slab design with concrete columns and shear walls; however, to reduce cost, the design was transitioned to a post-tensioned slab system.
- We remained flexible and accommodated this major switch in the project’s structural systems late in the design phase to help the project meet cost and schedule targets.
