Scotia Place
A sports and entertainment venue serving as the centerpiece for Calgary’s Culture + Entertainment District.
Project Details
OVERVIEW
Scotia Place, a sports and entertainment hub, uses a dynamic flame motif facade to reflect its role as a gathering spot open to the community. The facility will feature a new event center and arena, replacing the Scotiabank Saddledome - one of the NHL's oldest arenas - and will serve as the new home for the NHL's Calgary Flames. It will also offer a range of amenities for downtown residents, including restaurants, a team store, a community rink and plaza areas.
We are collaborating with Entuitive to provide structural design services to DIALOG and HOK for the project development, which is expected to open in 2027. Our construction engineering team also developed a progress Tekla model and representative connection design that general contractor CANA/Mortenson used during the bidding process. And we were engaged by steel contractor Walters Group to perform delegated connection design.
HIGHLIGHTS
- An open-air patio will be situated above the main entrance, and beneath it, a 140-meter digital display will be installed, set to become the longest in Canada.
- The event and ice surface are lowered to ensure the main concourse is at street level, allowing easy flow between the street, concourse and outdoor plazas. The seating's intimate design within the event center gives fans the feeling of being right in the middle of the action.
- Outside the event center, visitors will find a community ice rink, plaza spaces, four restaurants and the Calgary Flames team store, with the northeast corner reserved for future development. The public plazas celebrate Indigenous ties to the land, featuring elements such as the tipi and representations of Alberta's natural landscapes.
