Saint Clement Parish Dome Renovation
The restoration of century-old church dome balances the past and future: Modern products and techniques maintain historic aesthetics and details.
St. Clement Catholic Church was designed by Thomas P. Barnett of the St. Louis firm of Barnett, Haynes & Barnett and constructed between 1917 and 1918. The Byzantine-style church is built of limestone with a copper-clad dome located at the crossing of the church. The dome soars more than 80 feet above the ground level and is supported by 16 steel trusses and a concrete-encased ring beam. After more than 100 years, the dome structure and the limestone masonry cladding on the drum and buttresses began to deteriorate from moisture exposure and age.
The Archdiocese of Chicago engaged us to provide consulting engineering services for structural repairs to the 16 steel trusses that support the exterior dome; limestone restoration at the buttresses and drum; and repairs to the copper roofing, flashings and gutters that were contributing to moisture infiltration and related structural deterioration.
