Overview

The Rolling Stock Yards offers contemporary workspaces on York Way in King’s Cross. The façade design takes inspiration from the industrial heritage of the site and surrounding area with its historic link to the rail industry and freight haulage.

We provided façade design services to Squire & Partners for the development, which opened in 2020.

Highlights

  • The use of exposed steel beams at the slab edge and vertical timber shading fins echo the appearance of the nearby railway lines while perforated metal screens in front of the glazed façade take their cue from the sliding doors of engine sheds and freight wagons which were once prevalent in the area. Both features offer shading and privacy to the office spaces while at pavement level the building becomes more transparent allowing the reception and café to interact with the street.
  • From the earliest stages of development, we helped the team understand which areas of the design would attract cost premiums. By using commercially available façade components in unconventional ways, our facade design offers the appearance of a custom façade, achieving the desired architectural intent in an efficient manner.
  • A high performance cladding solution complies with the building’s demanding energy targets. We are reviewing the building envelope inputs established by the architect and MEP engineer to ensure the accuracy of the energy model.
