Pennsylvania State University, Donald P. Bellisario College of Communications
A historic building was renovated and expanded into a state-of-the-art media center to foster collaboration and creativity via a new central atrium.
overview
The historic 1949 Willard Building has been renovated and expanded into a state-of-the-art media center, thanks to a donation from TV producer Donald P. Bellisario. The College of Communications, which bears his name, now fosters collaboration and creativity thanks to a three-story atrium set within the building’s U-shaped footprint.
We provided comprehensive structural design services to STUDIOS Architecture for the project, which involved adding 63,000 square feet of studio space, laboratories, classrooms, offices and collaborative common areas.
highlights
- Our design incorporated a three-story steel-framed addition, seamlessly integrated into the existing U-shaped structure.
- The primary objectives were to optimize space efficiency and promote collaborative learning environments.
- Environmental sustainability was a key consideration, with the building designed to meet LEED certification standards.
- Through meticulous planning and innovative structural solutions, we ensured the successful realization of the project’s goals while adhering to stringent quality and sustainability criteria.
