Overview
The National Intrepid Center of Excellence (NICoE), located on the Walter Reed Medical Center campus, is a research, diagnosis and treatment center for service members with traumatic brain injuries and post-traumatic stress disorder. The NICoE was funded by the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund and turned over to the Department of Defense (DoD) upon completion.
We provided protective design services to Smith Group JJR for the campus, which opened in 2010.
Highlights
- The 72,000-square-foot, two-story facility consists of a reinforced concrete frame and a curved curtain wall façade spanning the height of the building entrance.
- The building was designed to meet the DoD's minimum antiterrorism standards for buildings and progressive-collapse standards. Accordingly, it achieves the necessary standoffs to surrounding roadways and incorporates a blast-resistant façade and a redundant structure.
