overview

A new hub for public safety and security serves the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), one of the busiest airports in the country. On a redeveloped 12-acre site, the LAX Airport Police Facility consolidates eight separate operational units into a three-story headquarters building that includes a practice range, multipurpose room, an 863-stall parking garage and an exterior training courtyard.

We provided sustainability consulting, protective design and security services, façade engineering and waterproofing consulting to Hensel Phelps and SOM for the 165,300-square-foot facility.

highlights

  • The project was procured as a design-build competition. Our team was involved in the design from the outset, and our early design feedback aided in the successful competition submission.
  • Our sustainability scope included a project sustainability plan, Los Angeles Green Building Code compliance, LEED certification and an FAA solar glare hazard analysis for PV arrays.
  • The scope for protective design and security included a Threat, Vulnerability and Risk Assessment (TVRA) for a range of man-made hazards. We led the owner through the selection of risk-reducing mitigations, which were then incorporated into the project design.
  • Our waterproofing scope included design of below-grade, roofing and other components.
  • The façade engineering scope included peer review of façade concepts and details at key stages of design.
