A Unique Façade Combining Functionality, Grace and Utility
Located just east of Manhattan’s Highline Park, Chelsea Modern is a visually stunning 12-story residential building with 47 high-end condominiums. Its signature feature – a blue tinted four-sided facade that zig zags across the width of the building – provides residents with ample daylight and floor-to-ceiling views of the surrounding neighborhood. The ground floor consists of garden units with gallery spaces and a glass block sidewalk provides natural light to the gallery spaces below.
We provided façade engineering services to Audrey Matlock Architects for this award-winning building that successfully combines good design with functionality, grace and utility.
Highlights
- The primary façade consists of a four-sided structurally glazed curtain wall system, divided into five undulating horizontal bands interspersed with a pattern of contrasting clear glass projected windows.
- The complexity of the articulating curtain wall called for exacting design, detailing and construction.
- The secondary façade designs include a stucco system and fixed and operable windows.
- We also provided curtain wall consulting services including roofing, waterproofing, field-testing and observation during the construction of the exterior wall.
