Special Structures
Is there any structural design we won’t tackle? Probably not. We have taken sculptors’ maquettes and scaled them up 100 times for monumental sculptures, worked on Christo’s ‘Valley Curtain,’ and even designed an all-paper bridge that was built and used for a magazine ad. Currently we are evaluating New York City’s famous aerial tram linking Manhattan and Roosevelt Island (originally designed by us in 1976) for a 21st century upgrade. Engineering principles are the same for all projects, but their appropriate application depends on project-specific conditions. Studying the projects and determining how to meet those specific needs gets our imagination going.
