Thornton Tomasetti provided structural design of a new three-story 170,000-square-foot structure designed to an enhanced performance-based seismic criteria. The building’s floor system was designed to meet the demands of the colocation industry. Columns and foundation were designed to support local areas of greatly increased loading for battery rooms. A performance based design was completed exceeding the prescriptive requirements of the building code to keep the data center operational after an earthquake.
This design-build project provides fiber optic and copper bandwidth for several major long- and short-haul carriers.
The building was constructed with 10 megawatts of power with on-site provisions for up to eight two-megawatt back-up generators to insure 24-hour operation. The floor loading capacity is designed for 175 pounds-per-square foot. The building utilizes 20,000 cubic yards of concrete and 5.5 million pounds of rebar.
