Nora and Hashem Naraghi Hall of Science
Thornton Tomasetti provided structural design for a 115,000-square-foot
multi-story structure consisting of two wings with a central lobby and atrium
and a cylindrical tower to support a rooftop observatory. The building houses
the Biology, Chemistry, and Physics/Geology Departments. Functions
include lecture classrooms, teaching laboratories, graduate research
laboratories, computer laboratories, animal care facility, greenhouse, faculty
and Dean’s offices, and miscellaneous storage and clerical support.
The structural system for this LEED-Silver certified structure consists of a
structural steel frame with composite concrete and steel floors which
incorporate vibration sensitivity criteria plus steel-braced frames strategically
located at fixed wall elements.
