Thornton Tomasetti provided structural design and building skin services to Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture, as part of the international design team, for the ultra-modern 245-meter-tall commercial tower and glass egg podium that serve as the Federation of Korean Industries’ new headquarters.

The building, including below-grade parking and support spaces, consists of 170,000 square meters of gross floor area with 111,000 square meters above grade. A separate three-dimensional free-form glass enclosure at the podium houses a 6,000-square-meter conference center.

The tower structural system consists of a reinforced concrete core with steel outrigger and perimeter belt trusses. The exterior wall of the tower has been furrowed as part of the architectural expression and to provide optimal utilization of building-integrated photovoltaic panels. The unique exterior skin is a key factor in disrupting the organization of wind vortices for the relatively prismatic tower geometry.

Thornton Tomasetti’s Structural and Building Skin practices worked closely with the architect to detail the glazing system utilizing Gehry Technologies’ Digital Project. The team employed parametric modeling to develop a rationalized geometry for panelization of the curved exterior. All design documents were generated and delivered via the building information model platforms Revit and Tekla.
