Chaudhry, Charu, and Sandeep Sikka. 2009. Conservation treatments for earthen structures in the Western Himalayas of India. APT bulletin 40, no. 2: 35-42.

This article elaborates on the ongoing research, monitoring, and conservation work at the temples of Nako Monastery and presents complex technical decisions addressing the structural compromise by sympathetic stabilization techniques of walls adorned with decorative interiors. These decisions are guided not only by the evaluation of historic usage but also by the present socioeconomic context and aim at future continuity.

  • Research on the Upgrade of Traditional Seismic Retrofits for Ancient Buddhist Temples in the Region of Spiti and Kinnaur in the Western Himalayas

In Getty Seismic Adobe Project 2006 Colloquium, 109-119. J. Paul Getty Trust

The ancient Buddhist temples in the western Himalayas have evolved spontaneously in response to the region’s extreme climatic conditions and limited material resources at hand. This publication describes the traditional seismic retrofits existing in the structures and explains possible techniques and materials for the development of new seismic retrofits to strengthen the structures and material components before another earthquake.
