The Great American Tower at Queen City Square
Cincinnati, Ohio

The Great American Tower topped out last month at approximately 5,800 tons of steel, one year and one day after work first began. Thornton Tomasetti is providing structural engineering services to HOK, which designed the 1.6-million-sf building. After the completion of a 130-ft tall, 150-ft wide interconnected elliptical steel tube crown at the apex of the building, at 44 stories, the tower will be the tallest building in Cincinnati. The 400-ton tiara will be put in place in August and will push the building’s height up to 665 feet. The project comprises an 11-story, 1,600-space post-tensioned concrete parking g…

New Bakersfield Federal Courthouse
Bakersfield, Calif.

Design work has started for the new two-story, 33,400-gross-sf Bakersfield Federal Courthouse. We are providing structural engineering services for this design-build project, in collaboration with Gilbane and NBBJ Architects. The project is part of a $5.5-billion General Services Administration initiative under the federal Recovery Act to build new energy-efficient federal buildings and convert existing structures into high-performance green buildings. The courthouse will be occupied by one magistrate court and chamber, the district clerk’s office, U.S. Marshals Service and U.S. Probation and Pretrial Services. The building is expected to achieve LEED Silver certification at mi…

Hwasung, Korea

The 280,000-m2 (three-million-sf) Metapolis has topped out. The mixed-use development consists of four residential high rises, a commercial tower, a hotel and a plaza with retail and community facilities. Thornton Tomasetti provided structural engineering services through extended design development for Phase I for the 66-story residential high rise, the tallest of the four residential towers and the country’s fourth tallest completed structure. The tower includes four levels of underground parking. A significant challenge was meeting both safety and serviceability requirements—controlling overall building drift and wind-induced accelerations at higher flo…

Chicago, Ill.

The final steel beam of the Rush University Medical Center’s new 14-story hospital was lifted into place last month. The 806,000-sf building will house acute and critical care patients, as well as surgical, diagnostic and therapeutic services. Thornton Tomasetti is providing structural design services for Perkins+Will for the project. In addition to the new hospital, the modernization program for the medical center includes the renovation and infill of the existing hospital and construction of new infrastructure components (loading dock, utility tunnels and pedestrian bridge), a central utility …
