Nassau Community College Life Sciences Building
Garden City, N.Y.

Façade construction started this month at the three-story, 75,000-sf life sciences facility, for which we are providing building skin services for the interior courtyard façade. The project is seeking to achive LEED Gold certification, making it the college’s first green building. The exterior skin comprises two wall types: the U-shaped courtyard is enclosed by a unitized, four-sided structurally glazed curtain wall system with state-of-the-art triple silver coated low-E glass and polyamide thermal isolators; the outside perimeter exterior wall is a copper panel rain screen with structurally glazed punched windows. A full-size mock-up of the façade was installed for visual inspection and testing to ensure quality and performance prior to fabrication and installation. Our services include shop drawing review and on-site inspection during construction administration and observation of field and laboratory testing of the curtain wall system. The building will house laboratories, classrooms, offices, conference and study space and lecture halls for the nursing and chemistry departments. Green elements include natural lighting and landscaping, a recycled copper panel exterior and the use of electronic whiteboards and wireless technology. Construction is scheduled for completion in spring 2012. Our client is Aurora Contractors. The project architect is Cannon Design.
