New Songdo City - Xi Harbor View
Thornton Tomasetti is providing structural design services for Xi Harbor View, which will be a bustling residential development of six 30 to 40-story high-rise and seven 14-story mid-rise buildings in New Songdo City. The 2.9-million-square-foot development also includes public amenities, assembly facilities above grade, and a basement level parking garage.
One of the challenges Thornton Tomasetti faced was developing a design resistant to typhoon-force winds, and engineering engage piles with loading ties to ensure sufficient bracing. The heavy weight of the concrete buildings was used as a cost-effective solution to counteract high hydropressure uplift, a consequence of the site being built on land reclaimed from the Yellow Sea.
