Sun Life Stadium Office Expansion
Thornton Tomasetti provided structural design services for the two-story concrete-framed (beam and slab) office expansion building. The 33,000-square-foot addition is separated from the existing stadium by an expansion joint at the floors and roof. The structure employs a two-way slab system supported by beams at the column lines, which doubles as the building’s moment frame for lateral wind loading.
Due to the unalterable underground utilities of the existing stadium, the expansion building sits on a strip footing foundation and, at one location, a transfer grade beam. A 20-foot concrete Vierendeel frame cantilever between the upper floor and roof supports the building over the existing stadium’s lower concourse.
