Funded through the San Diego Community College District’s $1.555 billion
Propositions S and N construction bond program, this college athletic
facility—originally constructed in 1964— received a full modernization and
expansion. Thornton Tomasetti provided structural engineering services for
the renovation, which added 4,800 square feet to the facility to include a
training room, weight room, locker rooms, and studios for martial arts, spinning, yoga, and kickboxing.

To realize the architect’s desire to convert the existing second-floor shower
and locker room area into a column-free gymnasium and athletic training
center, the floor needed to be strengthened. Thornton Tomasetti designed a
new concrete floor with steel moment frames and four seismically separated
sides to accommodate the long-span gymnasium and anticipated heavy loads from weight training equipment. A translucent, insulated fiberglass wall system replaced the original glazing allowing natural light to illuminate the building while controlling a comfortable climate inside.

In addition to exterior and interior upgrades, the facility’s building operating
systems were replaced with energy-efficient systems. Thornton Tomasetti
coordinated with other disciplines for locations and methods of nonstructural
components, such as HVAC duct placement and cabinetry connections as required by the Division of the State Architect. The building is registered for LEED certification.
