The groundbreaking ceremony for the Pegula Ice Arena—home to Penn State University’s new National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I men’s and women’s hockey programs—took place on campus Friday, April 20. The 6,000-seat arena will also feature training and performance space for figure skating and will host professional ice shows and National Hockey League and American Hockey League exhibition games. Thornton Tomasetti is providing structural design services to Crawford Architects/Bohlin Cywinski Jackson Architects and construction support services to Mortenson. The arena features an approximately 45-ft-tall glass and steel atrium and entrance. In addition to the main rink and seating bowl, it will house a practice rink, 5,000-sf weight room, locker rooms, offices, team lounge, hydrotherapy training room, concessions, club suites and a club lounge/VIP hospitality room. Completion is scheduled for the 2013-14 NCAA hockey season.
