Thornton Tomasetti Receives Excellence in Structural Engineering Outstanding Project Award for Projects at The University of Virginia and The Avenue

(New York, NY – March 7, 2011) – Thornton Tomasetti won two awards at the Structural Engineers Association of Metropolitan Washington’s (SEA-MW) Excellence in Structural Engineering Awards Gala on February 26, 2011 at the Willard Intercontinental Hotel in Washington, D.C.

Thornton Tomasetti received the awards for its work on The University of Virginia McIntire School of Commerce’s Rouss and Robertson Halls, in Charlottesville, Va., and on The Avenue at 2200 Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington, D.C.

The annual awards program recognizes projects that demonstrate innovation, creativity and constructability. Thornton Tomasetti was presented with awards in two of seven categories: new construction between $10 million and $50 million, and new construction over $50 million.

The University of Virginia McIntire School of Commerce, Rouss and Robertson Halls

» The project renovated historic Rouss Hall and added the new Robertson Hall.

» The project was designed by Hartman-Cox Architects. The general contractor was Gilbane Building Company.

» Construction on this historically sensitive site was completed in 2008, at a cost of $50 million.

» Robertson Hall is a new, 132,000 square-foot, four-story building with classrooms, a trading floor, student commons with a dining area, and an elevated courtyard.

» Rouss Hall is a three-story building designed by McKim Meade and White, originally constructed in 1896 on the south end of UVA’s Lawn. The renovation included structural reframing, roof repairs, and removal of part of the second floor to create a two-story connection to the new Robertson Hall.

The Avenue at 2200 Pennsylvania Avenue

» The Avenue is owned by Boston Properties Inc., and The George Washington University. It was designed by Pelli Clarke Pelli and Hickok Cole Architects. The general contractor was Clark Construction, LLC.

» The Avenue, which topped out in March 2010, is set to finish construction in 2011, at an estimated cost of $214 million.

» The Avenue is a 1.4-million square-foot mixed-use project, with residential, office and retail space.

» Two connected 10-story office structures share a glass atrium that was custom designed by Thornton Tomasetti. The office component totals 440,000 square feet and was designed to meet LEED Silver criteria.

» The structure contains 55,000 square feet of retail space on the ground floor, five levels of below-grade parking and an underground loading dock, topped by a courtyard with a fountain and trees.

» The residential section of the development offers 335 apartments in two 12-story towers and includes a fitness center and an extensive rooftop pool plaza.
